This piece has been sitting around the studio unmounted until yesterday! I worked with the idea of the labyrinth as a place of solitude and the spiraling around of meditation that to me embodies the idea of the pursuit of solitude and peace. For me, escape is a word ripe with meaning.  It can evoke smiles (a beach getaway) or fear (a prison break). It can be the start of something hopeful (leaving a tyrannical state) or something sad (a fate one can't escape).

This small quilt uses four panels printed on an inkjet printer -- a collage of type enlarged and tweaked though the computer. Although the text cannot be read, it still retains its quality of letters and letter forms. Here is my take on Urban Blight. It was completed very, very late. The fabric on the right was stenciled in two layers using thickened Jacquard DynaFlow fabric paints. Blight is not a subject I would generally pick. Since my quilts hang on the walls of the pain clinic I tend toward beautiful or whimsical subjects. But I know blight. Yes, I know. I am really behind. But I do have finally some time to complete the last two challenges and catch up for the new year -- one I hope will have me on a better footing with these little quilts!


This art was inspired by a photograph I took of a beautiful giant hibiscus -- one of the plate-sized ones that was developed here in Texas to withstand our heat and dry summers. What, you might ask does this quilt have to do with time. The agave shown is a Century Plant, one of my favorite plants and images of my home here in Pipe Creek. This year, after the drought broke in the fall, it seems that many of the agaves are blooming, sending up their 20 foot stalks almost overnight. With "Flying By" I wanted to show movement, the stream of life with the clocks flying out as it goes by.

 I used my handwritten hand-dyed fabric, added another dyed as the stream of life.  I used organza as the roman numerals on the largest clock, there is an antique clock face, and the others are painted lutradur that was stamped or hand drawn.

This piece started with a a piece of fabric painted with thickened dyes. It was cut up, painted, stamped, g;ittered,  and appliqued on. If Ihad more time, I would spend it here. This is a creek about 15 miles from my house, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.                     I printed the photo on four sheets of fabric and covered the entire surface with irregularly shaped pieces of fused fabric. The trees are multiple layers of fabric. The three photos show three couples on their wedding day, each one in a different decade:1) I can only guess who it shows: my late father's cousin and her husband.
